Old Navy was having a black Friday sale where if you spent $20 you got a free lego rock band! Since I've been wanting lego rock band we decided to go, even though it was at 3am on Thanksgiving. We ended up being the last ones in line to get wristbands, and it was for Lego Rock Band for Wii (we have 360). So we traded in one and kept one for a giveaway on this blog! coming sometime this week! Here are my Old Navy purchases:

Every year we go to Mitch's parents house for Thanksgiving and his dad makes a Feast, even when, like this year, there are only five of us. It was delicious as always.

When we were leaving we saw this amazing car parked outside of Mitch's apartment and I had to get a picture with it, even if it meant people look at me strangely on the street.

My Outfit for the day:
I had wanted to make a dress but wasn't feeling good so I had another outfit planned. In the end Mitch insisted I wear the giant sequin one.

I decided to curl my hair for the occasion, forgetting what a pain (literally) to sleep on curlers. It turned out cute, so I made Mitch take a picture.

Yummy stuffed mushrooms. I ended up eating about 10. Sooo tasty!

Keilbasa. I actually only had one slice because I was trying to save room for the turkey and because it's just not as good as my family's version (why grill it when you can smother it in ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar???)

The Best Part Of Thanksgiving. It's just mozzerella cheese, tomatos, and balsamic vinegar but it's just better on Thanksgiving. Soooo good. I'm blaming this on why I had no room for turkey.

Second reason why I had no room for turkey, the perogies. They are their, just covered by the delicious onions.
This is when we all took naps. So I'll break here and save the turkey/shopping post for later!

Project Runway Finale - Carol Hannah - Part 2

Look 7:

This has to be my favorite dress from all of the runway shows of Project Runway. I don't care what she says about it being a show piece I would totally wear that. The shape is completely new, and I'm shocked they didn't compliment her more on it.
Look 8:

The tops really cute, I like how it opens up like that. It also has very pretty detailing. It's too bad she didn't do anything more casual or I'm sure she would have placed higher.
Look 9:

It's pretty, the color's pretty, the draping's pretty but that's really all it is. Just pretty. I was impressed it was her 13th look, but then realized jersey is super easy to work in, especially for fit so no real kudos for that.
Look 10:

Blah. Boring and the sash is ugly. Although with that fabric simple was probably the best way to go.
Look 11:

The more I look at this one the more I like it. It most definitely evokes her fairy tale inspiration, the cape is super cute. I love the color and would definitely wear it. I wish I could say the same for the shorts. They're way to high on the waist and I think would look much better if they were made out of a different fabric. Just too much volume which in shorts isn't really a great look.
Look 12:

Love love love love love. I have no idea why this wasn't mentioned at judging, or why they didn't show it being mentioned at judging. It's a beautiful dress, but more than that it shows artistry and innovation. I've never seen anything like that, and it's still completely wearable. It's difficult to make something that is both innovative and wearable. Grump to you judges. I also really like the styling particularly on this one.
Look 13:

I'm a little confused why she did this as her finale piece. It's pretty much exactly the same as the dress she did for the first challenge, with a more elaborate skirt, and the judges sent her back as safe for that challenge. I could understand going back to it if they loved it. It's not that flattering. The color is off and boring. Her other dresses are beautiful and this one just looks overworked and unflattering.

Overall I thought her collection definitely "told a story" and deserved to win. It's the most different when compared to what else is out there right now and isn't that something that should be rewarded? But it seems like cute, pretty clothes that women want to wear aren't going to win out over the all black "innovative" collection (Irina, Jillian vs. Christian).

I just found out my laptop is completely broken (I'm now relying on my fiance to let me use his). Instead of feeling sad about it I decided to dress up for no good reason. We ended up playing Beatles rock band with some friends.

Project Runway Finale - Carol Hannah - Part 1

Carol Hannah's collection was definitely my favorite, probably because it was most my style. I love feminine and pretty dresses, and wish that the judges would value that ascetic more.
Look 1:

This dress is beautiful, too bad Lifetime doesn't have a picture of the side of the dress (grump grump). The draping of the material is amazing, so are the details that you don't really see well on tv. The colors are fantastic together and overall it is just really flattering.
Look 2:

Love love love this skirt. It's so much fun while still being wearable and flattering. Pairing it with a plain top was also a good move because it puts all of the focus on the skirt. The color is also beautiful and subtle. I wish she had gotten more credit for her use of color.
Look 3:

The top is super cute, even with all of the rope details I still think it's flattering. Paired with jeans it could be a great casual look. I'm not a big fan of the pants, they bunch up in a strange way around the ankle.
Look 4:

And clunk. I like that she seemed to be trying something different but I just felt that it was an unflattering shape. Plus it was boring compared to other things she did.
Look 5:

Love this dress. It is an interesting shape at the top and still flattering. Plus the color is gorgeous. I would buy this and just wear it every day if I could. She also did a great job of picking the fabric, it moved beautifully.
Look 6:

I have pretty much the same to say about this dress. The fit is fantastic and I love the detailing and how it cascades down the dress and meshes with the bottom.

I wore this for Monday Night Football (so it wasn't so much today's daily outfit). I only go for the cheap wings and beer, and it's always fun dressing up because I am one of the few girls of our friends that actually go. We then went to play Magic cards, or they played and I watched. I then made my own deck (even though it's incredibly nerdy it's still kind of fun). I actually beat Mitch most of the time, and my first game with lots of people was a stalemate. I'm officially a huge nerd now I think ;-).

So Irina won Project Runway. Honestly, I'm not surprised but that doesn't mean I still can't be dissapointed. My favorite collection was Carol Hannah's and I really wish that sometimes the designers would just reward prettiness. Her's was what I would wear everyday if I could wear anything. Althea's was even extremely wearable. Shouldn't that trump "showmanship"? They already got a designer who performs on the runway (Christian) shouldn't they look for a designer who can start a real business and get their clothes out there? Grump to you judges. Also, Irina's t-shirts really seemed to give her an edge, Nina said something along the lines of they showed her individuality. But then I read this on Project Rungay, . Interesting isn't it? Anyway I completely disagree. Again. If anything she should have lost based on her hats.

Anyway, I'm going to tear apart the collections soon, hopefully. My laptop broke, sadness, so I'm dependent on my fiance's for the time being.

I made this pink dress last year, but had trouble making the hem straight so it ended up being waaay too short to be a dress. I've only worn it to Halloween so far, with shorts underneath. Then I got my shiny leggings and thought why not go all out, shinywise. So I paired my shiny leggings with my very shiny dress/top.

Project Runway Recap - Episode 11

I know I'm late with my recap, but I didn't have any place to watch the episode until yesterday! Torture!
Anyway, I really wasn't missing much. The producers really tried to elicit drama with the accusations of cheating but it was really a pretty boring episode. The challenge was to make a look to accompany their best look. Everyone's winning looks were up there...except Logan's. Because he hasn't even had a look in the top three yet. I think we know who's going home this week. Unless he comes up with something amazing he better be going home, it's seriously a joke that he's still there. Actually we all know who's going to be the final three, right now it's just a matter of waiting for that. I don't even feel like watching next week because I know exactly who will be eliminated.
The Outfits:

Althea's winner. I liked it, I probably would have loved it if her model was wearing a bra. Honestly how has no one said anything about that? But the pants were kind of awesome, I loved the bottom detail. Also, the sweater looks super comfy while still being fashionable, it didn't overwhelm. I agree with Heidi, I totally want that sweater.

Carol Hannah's. It's super cute. I love the length and the volume of the skirt. The bodice was also really interesting. I also really like pockets in dresses. Also, I don't know how she could be criticized about the boob issue when it wasn't even mentioned with Althea's.

Irina's. Tacky. I completely agree with Nina, and this is why Michael Kor's and Nina need to be there. Of course Heidi is going to like tight and short, and Nick has slight taste issues. The sweater's nice, but it kind of relies on the hideous belt. I have no idea why she came in second.

Christopher's. They should have just eliminated all three of the bottom people this week. This is so bad. It had some potential, I think if he used like a quarter of the petals and took off the bottom ruffles completely it could have been cute.

Gordana's. I really thought she was going home after they showed that picture of her and her family. Anytime they do a sad backstory you know that person is going to be in trouble. And she was. And she should have been. Her jacket was the saddest thing I've ever seen. Why would she combine grey, with a limp collar, and horrible styling choices? I have no idea why she wasn't eliminated. At least Logan's didn't make me cry.

Logan's. There was just too much of everything. Plus, at this point using zippers isn't creative, it's incredibly derivative. Especially when someone just did it in the last challenge. He had the be eliminated anyway for two things, that collar and the fact that he was the only one without a winning look to work off of.
Next week we'll watch Gordana and Christopher get kicked off! (just a guess...)

Halloween 2009

So unfortunately my Halloween costume didn't come out as amazing as I had planned, mostly because I was sick the week before Halloween and only had a day instead of a week to make it. But I did manage to make enough to actually wear.

Here's a picture where the colors are more accurate but I look horrible:

So I went as Elaine from the Monkey Island games (which if you haven't played you should!). Mitch went as Guybrush Threepwood. We decided to go as the characters from the first game, which was made when games were still all pixelated (and just better). So I made my costume pixelated. The skirt jutted out into squares and the top had ruffles (you can't really see them) that were squared off. We also made our own wigs using felt as the hair so it looked cartoony. Mitch had a pixelated wig but I didn't have enough time to make his costume.
Next year I'm starting at the beginning of October. I've already learned my lesson and I'm going to start my Thanksgiving day outfit now. Last year I did that last minute too (although it came out awesome).
We ended up going to a murder mystery party for Halloween which was fun, but I've been around Mitch too much to not notice when a game is poorly designed. So that took some of the fun out of it, but the people were fun which made up for the bad game. Overall I had a great Halloween. Anyone do anything particularly fun?

for the lack of posting over the past week. I've been sick with the flu (regular, not swine!) plus getting our Halloween outfits ready (which are going to be awesome). I'll start posting regularly again on Nov. 1st. Halloween is completely my holiday. I've always believed very strongly that if you don't make your costume yourself it doesn't count. For example, when I was younger I dressed as a picnic in a costume that me and my mother made. It was amazing. And I struggled with this huge costume all night because I made it. I'll post pictures of our finished costumes after Halloween, and after they're finished.

Urban Outfitters is Evil

I went to Urban Outfitters last night and was treated to some awful behavior by the sales staff. I went their intending to try and find the clothes I used in my online styling from Urban Outfitters. Unfortunately I could only find the hat and sweater, so I went to find a skirt that had a similar vibe and try on the whole outfit.

Here I'm wearing my own Ralph Lauren shoes and then two pieces from Urban Outfitters.
This sweater is the same from before and the skirt is not actually online. This is what happened when I went to try on the outfit with the hat (which I was not allowed to bring in the dressing room because I might steal it? In my tiny tiny purse?).

I was going to have my fiance take a picture of me outside of the dressing room when two staff members rushed over and yelled that we weren't allowed to take pictures in the store. Not even told nicely that it was store policy, we were attacked. Mitch didn't care and took a picture of me walking back into the room, so I don't have any good pictures of the outfit with the hat.
Ultimately the sweater and hat were still cute, but the sweater did not go with the skirt I found. Also, I am definitely never going back to shop there again. You would think that in this economy customer service would be highly valued but apparently not at Urban Outfitters, at least the one in Harvard Square.

One Stop Shopping - Urban Outfitters

I normally don't like Urban Outfitters, it's kind of overpriced for what it is. I mean, I can get the stuff they have in there at a thrift store for a tiny percentage of the price. However, I was online window shopping and I saw a tulle skirt that I loved and thought, it would be fun to build an outfit around this.

I love gray for fall, with just splashes of color thrown in with accessories.

Halloween 2008

Last Halloween my fiance and I decided to do a couples outfit and make them ourselves. First we took a look at our combined interests at the time which were lego Star Wars and Project Runway. So we decided to combine those to make a costume.

I was Heidi Klum dressing up as a Gonk droid from Lego Star Wars. I made the pink dress and Mitch made the Gonk Droid costume and got the wig. I loved it, no one know what I was.

Mitch was Tim Gunn as a Jedi! I made him a jedi robe out of pinstripe suit material and a Jedi tabbard or something out of sweater vest material. He wore suit clothes underneath and carried his awesome light saber.

And finally we had to dress our cat Crystal up. She went as a tiger.

Project Runway

Last week on Project Runway cutie pie Shirin was eliminated for her couture witches costume, while Carol Hannah won with her gown. For a stage look. Ok, whatever judges I guess when you have what you had up there you have to make tough choices.
On to this week. Both Carol Hannah and Nicolas have interviews right off the bat. I have a feeling one of them will be in trouble... Also, what is Gordana wearing? She should be kicked off for that alone.

Come on Gordana, you're a DESIGNER

Their challenge is going to be announced by Tim Gunn in the store of a world renowned designer with a store on Rodeo Drive. Althea says it could be anyone. It turns out to be...Micheal Kors. You know they were all a little bit disappointed.

I mean, Nicolas doesn't exactly look blown away.

Not that Michael Kors isn't amazing, I'd just rather him in the judges chair. For the challenge they will have to design a look based on one of his favorite locales, New York, Hollywood, Greece, St. Tropez, Aspen, Sante Fe (a little confused about this one, not gonna lie), and Palm Beach. We get:
Carol Hannah: Palm Beach
Nicolas: Greece (Not NYC because it's too easy for him, he wants a challenge. I do not see anything good coming out of this).
Althea: St. Tropez
Gordana: New York City
Irina: Aspen (outerwear is one of her specialties it seems)
Christopher: Santa Fe

Because nothing says fashion design inspiration like a dead animal skull on a stick. Lovely.
Logan: Hollywood
They then get 30 minutes to sketch, $150, and until the end of the day to finish.
The boys seem to be struggling right off the bat. Christopher's looks fit for an amish person to wear (which was bitchy of Irina to say, true, but also right on the mark). Nicolas doesn't seem to know what people wear in Greece which makes me wonder why he chose it to begin with.
Gordana spent all but $30 on the materials for the neckpiece/necklace. This isn't good when you're making a park avenue dress. It's hard to make $30 look expensive and you know Heidi will jump down your throat for that!
The Final Looks:
Logan and Hollywood:

I really don't see Hollywood in this at all. Maybe if the jeans weren't white
and he took away the suspenders away altogether. But they woud still be just
clothes, not fashion. Definite bottom 3.

Althea and St. Tropez:

I actually kind of like this. I like the shorts, they're in an unexpected color.

I think the whole look is appropriate for St. Tropez, not really sure. I just wish it wasn't so messy and that sash were taken away. Also, why can't the models wear bras?
It can be so distracting! I'll go with top three or safe.

Nicolas and Greece:

First of all the styling on this is atrocious. The hair is a complete mess.
Surprisingly enough I do kind of like the pants and the bottom detailing, I hate
the top of them though. The shirt could have been very pretty
but the fit around the bust is very strange. It also doesn't say Greece to me
at all. I'm going with bottom 2 for him.

Carol Hannah and Palm Beach:
When I think of Palm Beach fashion I immdeiately think of Florida retirees and this:

So really I thought CH had her work cut out for her.

This is really pretty, it reminds of an Uli dress in a good way.
It's a perfect beach party dress, and the detailing on the back was gorgeous,
I can definitely see the glamorous Palm Beach in this. Definite Top Three Entry.

Christopher and Santa Fe:

I was confused with the choice of Santa Fe to begin with. I've never associated it
with fashion. So I have to hand it to Christopher because I can definitely see
Santa Fe in this, and even in more than just the belt. The skirt feels
like the desert. And I have to admit this dress is kind of cute but maybe
only in comparison to the first dress before he made the skirt shorter. I'd say
bottom three for him.

Irina and Aspen:

This is why Irina can get away with being bitchy. This is GORGEOUS!
Everything's perfect. The inspiration of Aspen is clean. I love the rich snowbunny look,
she may wear ski pants but will not be goign skiing. I would love
to lounge around in this outfit drinking peppermint schnapps hot chocolate. Plus that
vest is perfection, it brings the look over the top. Definite win. And I'm now going to
say that she is most definitely going to be in the top three.

Gordana and New York City:

I know that this really doesn't show the dress, but the dress wasn't
exactly the main focal point anyway. The necklace is beautiful and would
be a perfect New York accessory. However I wasn't a big fan of the dress
and it was extremely poorly constructed. I'm surprised they didn't call her out on that.
Anyway, I'd still put her in the top three just because of how awful the
guys looks were.

And we have Althea is safe. Logan, Christopher, and Nicolas in the bottom. Irina, Carol Hannah and Gordana in the top.
Carol Hannah comes in third.
Irina wins! That just came out of nowhere.
Gordana comes in second, which is a surprise I guess.
Logan comes in third to last which is pretty much just because of his pretty straight boy looks. I mean suspenders and white jeans?
Christopher and Nicolas are in the bottom two with Nicolas going home. Drats.
I am extremely excited about Nicolas going home. He hasn't done a single thing that I've liked and I could go on and on about how his science fiction winning look wasn't science fiction at all, but fantasy. However I've already bored my friends with that so I won't bore you.
I have a feeling that we're going to have an all girl finale, the boys just keep getting weaker and weaker.

Glee

8 episodes into this show and I'm officially hooked. It's really an amazing show with great potential (some of the storylines are slightly frustrating and some characters are completely one dimensional). But the musical numbers are fantastic and so much fun. There really aren't enough fun shows on the air. However there is something else that really adds a pop to the show and that's the fashion. It's what gives the show it's whimsy and it really is done perfectly.
Episode 8 Fashion:
First there's Emma, the school guidance counselor. She's adorable and with her clothes she looks almost like what a cartoon guidance counselor would look like. She had some great fashion moments this episode.

First is her guidance counselor look. It's so adorable. The color blue is beautiful and the flower pin makes the whole look come together.

This is wedding dress number one, borrowed from her cousin who had her wedding when they were obsessed with Princess Di's dress. It's very unfortunate, but the picture of her walking down the hall with the long train is gorgeous. The dress also plays a part in the plot, causing Will to trip and Emma to fall on top of him. Fashion as plot, it's so great.

This dress is perfection on her. She looks beautiful and the dress completely fits with her character.
Secondly we have Rachel.

This outfit is perfect for the overachieving perfectionist who still wants to look good so boys (Finn) will notice her. It's a great combination of serious school girl with whimsy in the sleeves and the pink of the skirt.
Best of all is Sue in her Zoot Suit. You really can't blame her for not knowing only the guys wore them.

This picture is the epitome of Sue, eccentric, kind of out of touch with reality (come on, any Sue Sees It clips will assure you of that). Also, this scene wouldn't have been so touching without the Zoot suit. It just made the whole scene more uncomfortable.
Overall I love the fashions on this show. It's almost like Pushing Daises where the clothing was almost as important to the show as the plot.

I couldn't figure out what to wear today when I saw my vintage slips. I thought I'd try out layering them and see what happened. Turned out that I like how they look together, plus together they are not at all see through! They're also incredibly comfortable, probably because they're meant to be worn to bed.

When I thought of topshop I immediately thought of making a crazy outfit, because that's what they're known for. Somehow I ended up with what I think would be perfect for a cozy cuddle in front of a fire on a cold day. With a log cabin involved somehow, maybe a bearskin rug.

A few years ago I was pressured into buying this bracelet by a very pushy lady I worked with. It's really nice, but it was way to expensive for me. And now I can't wear it because it reminds me of this horrible woman and makes me angry at myself for giving in to her. So I'm trying to sell it on ebay but no one's buying it. I don't understand why. It was really expensive to start with. I managed to sell boots on ebay for more than I paid for them. Ok, rant over.

I know that every year people use Halloween as an excuse to dress like a slut, but this is going a little bit too far.

Honestly, it's a slutty Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. That's bad enough. But this one just goes too far. There are zippers on the breasts. Honestly, why on Halloween would you need easy access to your breasts? Is this a maternity Halloween outfit, for slutty new moms? It's baffling.

For my halloween costume I needed to make a simple fleece hat so I would have something to connect the felt hair to (you'll see what I'm talking about when I post my costume). I also made this kind of hat for my fiance for valentines day, embroidered with Batman and he loved it. It's super easy to make, warm, and depending on the kind of fleece and embellishments you use it can be super chic as well. (I'm assuming that you have a sewing machine and know how to use the basic stitches)
Here is my finished product:

(I didn't do any treatment to the bottom hem because it's going to be covered for mine, but I will explain different options of what to do)
First of all you need the supplies:

1. Sewing Machine*
2. About 1/2 of fleece
3. Matching thread
4. Measuring Tape
5. Fabric Pencil
6. Scissors
Step 1
First you need to get some measurements. First measure around your head at the part where the hat is going to rest (in other words measure more around your hairline than going across the forehead). Now take this measurement and divide it by 4. This hat is comprised of four parts so this will be the length of the bottom of each piece.
Now measure from in front of your ear to the crown of your head. This will be the height of each of the pieces. Measuring in front of your ear ensures that the hat will be large enough to cover your ears. What good is a hat if you have cold ears?
Step 2
Now you will draw out the pieces using your measurements. Make a straight line the length of measurement 1. Now find the middle of that line and draw a straight line the length of measurement 2 perpendicular to it. Then draw curved lines from the top of the second line to the ends of the first line. You'll have a shape that looks like this:

Step 3
Cut out this piece and use it to create three more. Now you have all of the pieces of your hat!
Step 4
The sewing. First of all take two pieces of scraps of the fleece and practice sewing on it. Fleece can be a little bit tricky to sew on.
Now for the real ones. Take two of the pieces and lay them down, with the right sides facing each other. With fleece it's hard to tell which is the right side and which is the wrong side, so if you're having a lot of difficulty it means it doesn't matter since no one will ever notice.
Start at the bottom of the hat. Make sure to sew back and forth when you start so the seam doesn't come undone and slowly and carefully sew along the curve, leaving about a 1/4 inch seam allowance. When you get to the point stop and sew back and forth a few times again.
Do this with the next piece and one of the pieces you just sewed on. Do the exact same thing.
Now do the same thing with the last piece. The only difference with the last piece is that when you sew the final seam you will be closing the hat. When you do this turn it inside out and you'll have a hat!
Step 5
Try it on. If it's too loose just sew the seams again leaving a larger seam allowance this time and cut off the excess. If it's too small you'll have to start over (I've done this many times, it sucks but luckily the hat doesn't take too long to make).
Now for the hem the easiest option is to just fold the hem underneath to the length you want. Another option is to use a stretch stitch to hold the hem in place. Don't use a straight stitch or you won't be able to stretch the hat to get it on your head. The fanciest way is to use a decorative stretch stitch to hold the hem in place. But really, with this hat just folding it works fine and it stays while you're wearing it. And if it ever gets really cold you can unfold it and try to cover as much of your face as possible :-).
Step 6
Now you can embellish the hat. You could glue on rhinestones or sequins. In the past I've made batman ears out of the left over fleece and sewed them on. I've also embroidered a batman (my fiance really likes Batman if you couldn't already tell). Really it's up to you. This is a great base to put your creativity onto.
Congratulations! You now have your very own hat!

*This can be done with hand stitching it will just take a bit longer. Exact same process though.

One Stop Shopping - Forever 21

When I used to go shopping with my mother she would always make me buy entire outfits at one store if I found something I liked. Her reasoning was that what if you can't find anything to go with it? Then you shouldn't buy it. Now it's useful to be able to buy an entire outfit in one store because it's faster and easier if you need to get an entire outfit. So here's an outfit I picked with all the clothes from Forever 21.

I love this outfit. The sweater has a military jacket edge to it, which is very in right now. The fact that it's a cardigan takes away the hardness. It also goes great with the skirt, which I love. It's cute and feminine, but also sexy which is perfect for a date.

Last night I finished making both of these awesome shoes so I constructed my outfit around that. I also wasn't sure of the weather so I decided to wear my corduroy pants that work in any temperature. But then I put them on and realized they were flared and I hate flared pants, so I quickly sewed them into skinnies. So fashion disaster averted ;-). I also had just finished putting these awesome purple rhinestone buttons onto my tuxedo jacket so I decided why not, and wore that as well.

I think this is perfect for a date because it's sexy but understated sexy. The one shoulder shirt shows off your shoulders and collarbone which are sexy on all body types. Also, wearing jeans is a good choice for a date, they're much more laid back than a dress and I think there's nothing better than a great skinny jean. The high heels are a must as well as the great silver accessories which look great with the dark blue of the shirt!

Neil DeGrasse Tyson. I mean come on, he pretty much single handedly declared Pluto to not be a planet. You have to admire someone with that amount of power. Plus he's just an amazing person, I've seen him speak in person and he's incredibly engaging . He makes science fun, just watch NOVA and you'll agree.

Rachel Zoe. For so many reasons. First, she has the best job in the world, getting to style couture gowns everyday. Secondly, she does have an amazing sense of style and was the reason I started to fall in love with vintage. Plus she is a marketing genius. Before her show all I knew about her were vaugely negative things but after watching her (amazing) show she is now one of my favorite people!

Levar Burton. He was on not one but TWO of my favorite tv shows, Star Trek TNG and Reading Rainbow. I was obsessed with Reading Rainbow, everytimg the theme song started I would yell for my dad because we HAD to dance to it. Also, you have to admire someone who wore that eye thing at work every day. And I was complaining about suits earlier.

Mitchell Morris! First of all he is the best fiance in the entire world. Second, he likes to watch Star Trek, science shows, House, and Project Runway. Name another boy that likes to watch all of those. He also goes along with all of my crazy ideas, and even encourages them. I mean, we're going to be pixelated video game characters for Halloween. How much nerdier can you get? He also makes really great presents.

I think this look would be perfect for a casual Friday work look, or if your workplace is more casual.

I started out with the blouse which I love. The colors are gorgeous and I love the sleeves. Then I paired it with some great plain trousers so the blouse could take center state. Also the neckline was screaming for a necklace and I loved the small details on the gold one. Finally I'm obsessed with the shoes, and even though the colors don't match I think a peak of bronze really sets off the whole look.

I realized now that graduation is approaching I'll need to get some work appropriate clothes. The only problem is that if I had to wear a boring suit everyday I would die. It's exactly why I left Catholic school. So I picked out this as a possibility:

First of all the skirt is amazing, and it's knee length so I think it's office appropriate. I also really love the blazer, the little bows on the pockets keeps it young (not too young) and fun instead of dowdy. I also like having a flash of color under the blazer by using the tank top.

DIY from the Runway

When I saw these shoes

at the Louis Vuitton show my first thought was that I needed them. Then I realized they'd never actually mass produce them. But then I finally realized that I could totally DIY them!
I started with a plain black pair of high heeled sandals, $5 from the thrift store, orginally from Banana Republic.

And of course nail polish:

First I attached the nail polish (it helps to file the glass of the bottle to get it to stick better), with krazy glue, to the t-strap of the sandal. Luckily in this case it was the exact same size:

Then I started attaching the rhinestones, one by one, to the ankle strap that did not have the holes in it.

When I was done with that I was going to attach feathers to the front but thought it looked a little cheesy. So instead I attached more rhinestones because you can never have too many. Here is the finished product, slightly more elegant than the original inspiration:

I love leopard. I'm pretty sure you can tell from other things I've posted. I also think that it goes perfectly with the lace dress. The black sash matches, and it gives the dress, which could go kind of prim and prissy, a little bit of an edge. Same thing with the shoes. They give the outfit sparkle which is reflected in the earrings.

I have a pair of amazing gray shoes that I love but unfortunately make feet bleed. I think I have abnormally big bones that stick out from my ankle, so any shoes that hit there are no good for me. Other than that they're super comfortable and so so so adorable. I have to sell them though, because if I don't I know I'll be tempted to wear them and go through the whole feet hurting thing again. It's a vicious cycle.

My Favorite People Part 1

So I was looking at pictures and saw one of Padma and though to myself, she is super awesome, definitely one of my favorite people. This got me thinking about the rest of my favorite people, so I thought I would share the list with you.

First of all Padma. I mean how can you not love her. She's beautiful, especially now that shes pregnant. She's also an awesome host on Top Chef (believe me, just watch the first season and you'll agree). She also dated someone with a fatwa on his head, how cool is that!? Also, she has scars and doesn't try to hide them, and as someone with a huge scar that's very cool to me.

Second, Nene from the Real Housewives of Atlanta! Seriously I want to be her best friend. She seems like so much fun, and always just says what she's thinking, which I love. She also never takes crap from people. I just want to hang out and like gossip with her while drinking wine or something.

Third is Agatha de la ruiz Prada. Because anyone who can make this for a major fashion show has to be awesome. Also, just look at her website. Only a super happy fun person could make that website. It's just too bad that the whole language barrier would be a problem.

Last for now is Sue from Glee. Yes I know she's a fictional character but she's so great on the show, she always has the best lines. Some examples:
I empower my Cheerios to be champions. Do they go to college? I don't know. I don't care. Should they learn Spanish? Sure, if they wanna become dishwashers and gardeners.
I don't trust a man with curly hair. I can't help but picture little birds laying sulfurous eggs in there, and it disgusts me.
Not everyone is gonna have the walnuts to take a pro-littering stance. But I will not rest until every inch of our fair state is covered in garbage.

I finally realized that since it's cold in New England for what seems like 90% of the time, I should probably accumulate a wardrobe of cute coats. So far I have three that I loooooove.

This leather jacket I got at the thrift store for $10! I'm pretty sure they didn't realize that it was real leather. It also fit perfectly, so I had to get it.

My fiance got me rabbit fur for my birthday and after a long while I produced this coat. It took so long because the fabric was so pretty and soft I was scared to cut into it. Anyway I love how it came out and wear it any time it's cold enough and not raining. It's incredibly warm and soft.

This is my latest acquisition, a leopard print cape from the 1950's. I've been looking for a cape and a leopard jacket so this one fit both! It's also super comfy, but not very practical for very cold days because of the large armholes. I do love that it's vintage and definitely has a 50s feel to it.

Scary Movies

This weekend Mitch and I saw seriously the scariest movie ever, Paranormal Activity.

It was the first movie I've ever seen that was actually scary, and that didn't just have things jump out at you or be disgusting (Saw I'm talking to you). It was just a slow long build up of scary events that cultimated with the scariest moment in movie history. I'm not even exaggerating here. I never get scared from movies and I was uneasy all through supper (where we had ribs, and I love ribs). So everyone should see this movie. Somehow even the cliche ghost movie tropes are still surprising and terrifying. It's amazing!

Wedding

So I'm engaged and have been planning my wedding in my mind for awhile. I want it to be amazing but small, def. don't need the stress of a sit down dinner. Right now I had an idea to have our wedding in the playground in central park that we had our first date in, how much fun would that be?

So now I'm super excited. I just need a place to dance, because dancing will definitely be necessary at this wedding. We're going to have an all out first dance, choreographed and everything to Rock Lobster.

What I Do During Gaming Conventions

So I realized this past weekend that Gaming Conventions aren't really for me. I like about 1 hour of games, not so much 48 hours. Although I did have lots of fun in the hotel room, I have a huge love of hotels - I think it's because you can make a huge mess and someone else will clean it up. So here's what I did during the convention.

I made a fort! For some reason my child side came out during this past weekend, so I had tons of fun.

Trust me, it was an awesome fort.
Another thing, we had two double beds and I couldn't help myself from jumping on them. Honestly sometimes I think I'm an 8 year old.

Stuffed Animal Bags!!! At the Giles show in Paris (which was so much fun, thank god he didn't lose any whimsy with the move from London) large triceratops bags were featured.

I am for one very excited about this possibility. Maybe because I already own two stuffed animal bags that I got at Storyland(best place in the world!). I say everyone should go all out with this trend. Every time I carry my bags I get tons of compliments.

Fashion at the Gaming Convention Day 1

Today was the first day of a gaming convention in Schenectady NY, of which I didn't actually participate so much as hang out while my finace played games. Still fun though. I also tried to get some gamers *cough cough nerds cough cough* to let me take pictures of what they were wearing and only a few let me. Jumping on the bed

Yesterday I decided to try and fallify one of my favorite vintage dresses by adding a long sleeve black shirt underneath. It didn't really work but it was still fun to wear, I love the skirt.

These are amazing! Steampunk shoes, even if I don't like steam punk all that much these shoes are pretty cool. I'm thinking that I could just spraypainting a cheap pair of booties bronze. Then find metal pieces from the hardwar store, spray paint them gold and attach to the heel of the shoe. Probably very difficult but also probably worth it in the end.

Louis Vuitton Spring 2010
These look like sandals that have everythiing from the $1 section of CVS attached to them. But they look so pretty! And come on, nail polish bottles on your feet are pretty cool. And this would be a much easier project, just get some cheap sandals, nail polish, paint for the shoes, some rabbits feet and you're good to go!

Alexander McQueen Spring 2010
I kind of love this skirt, not to mention it would be incredibly easy to make yourself. It reminds me of the big strips of rubber in the car wash and also like those paper lanterns you make when you're in elementary school.

Sadly enough I had to turn the search on google onto strict and still go through 3 pages before finding a picture that didn't feature scantily clad girls washing cars.

I'm right about that though right? I'm very excited about making the shoes, hopefully I'll find some free time at some point.

My Favorite Paris Collection

Was by far the Victor and Rolf spring 2010 show. It involved two of my favorite things, lots and lots of tulle and completely unwearable and a complete fantasy.
Some of my favorite outfits (pretty much all of them)

Slightly incongruous to the rest of the pieces but you really have to break up the tulle a little bit. Plus the color and draping is gorgeous.

I love how they played around with the tulle to make such interesting shapes.

I love love this look (minus the pants). I'm definitely putting this on my attempt to make list.

Again I love the pattern they made with the tulle, and the pinks are super pretty.

Giant armadillo dress! Could really only be topped by a...

Hot pink swiss cheese dress! I love the illusions of the dress, it looks like she has no legs. The cut outs are just amazing!

My absolute favorite dress! The optical illusion is unbelievable. My goal for the next year is to make my own interpretation of the dress.

The hips? I love love love them. I always like that shape and made with tulle just makes the whole thing better.

This dress is insane! I love how her hand sticks out of the skirt. It's such a unique and amazing shape as well.

And of course the shoes are gorgeous. I'm obsesses with sandal boots lately, and these are just exquisite.

Iceberg, designed by Paulo Germani, produced a collection inspired by Mickey Mouse! In Milan! Not London where most of the crazy shows (catepillar tunnel dress...) are put on. I personally loved it. The clothes that didn't feature the mouse were completely wearable and amazing too.

I love that someone finally did this. The shoulders that are on trend right now do look completely like Mickey's ears, so why not put the top of his head as the bodice for a dress?

I love the Mickey heads covering her nipples in the sheer shirt. It's a great contradiction between the innocence of the cartoon character and the naughtiness of a sheer shirt. Plus the skirt is beautiful.

This was the first of the non-Mickey looks that I loved. Its a perfect girly suit, and I love the detailing around the waist.

This dress just looks like a lot of fun to wear. The fabric's great and I love the shape of the sleeve.

I'm in love with this coat. I think after you have a leopard print coat the next thing you need is a neon pink satin full skirted trench coat. It goes with anything really. I mean, neon pink is totally the next neutral.

Every fall and winter I get incredibly jealous of all of the girls wearing incredibly cute coats that match the rest of their outfits. I've always been one of those people that has two coats, one for cold days and one for really cold days. And neither are particularly fashionable. Well I decided that this was going to end and have lately become obsessed with coats for the winter and fall. This is a collage of beautiful coats that I lust for but cannot afford.

1. Tory Burch $850: Sadly the cheapest coat here, and also the least coatish. That's what I love about it though, that it looks like a leather ruffled shirt. You could never get away with wearing a leather ruffled shirt, but turn it into a coat and its perfect. This would be amazing while the weather is still above freezing.
2. Burberry $995: I'm in love with this coat even though it's not leather or fur, my current obsessions, and it has 3/4 length sleeves. On a winter coat. It just seems so impractical, but who cares about the lower part of your arms when you look so pretty? Plus it has a hood, imagine how cute you would look wearing the hood while it's lightly snowing. It is the perfect winter white as well.
3. Armani $7,550: Yes I know, it's over seven thousand dollars. There is no way I would ever in my life pay that much for any item of clothing, but look how pretty! Plus it's leather and fur, sherling lamb leather laser cut to look like crocodile. How awesome is that. I think the only way you can get away with charging that much for a coat is if there's a laser involved somewhere.
4. Armani $7,045: Look, it's cheaper than the last one! And also much more fur involved. I also love gray for the fall, not only is it trendy but its such a timeless color that you'd be able to wear this coat forever, and even hand it down as a family heirloom. Not that I'm trying to talk myself into buying this. Its dyed rabbit fur, and rabbit fur is so incredibly soft. I also love love love the giant collar.
5. Armani $3245: A second rabbit fur coat from Armani. This ones more modern looking, and sleeker. I think I like it because it looks similar to a rabbit fur jacket that I made (cough for under $50 cough cough). Armani made some really amazing coats this season. Kudos.
6. Alexander McQueen $5,995: I love this one because it combines three of my favorite jacket trends, fur, leather, and biker chic. I have one of all three but not one that puts them all together. I also love the white and black together, it's such a classic combination so even if the shape of the jacket goes out of style you'll still be able to pull it off. Also, epaulets.

I have personally acquired what I think is a pretty complete fall coat collection. I made a rabbit fur coat last spring so I'm ready for the fur. I also got full length mink coat at a yard sale over the summer for $5, so I will definitely be breaking that out once it gets freezing cold. I have a leather jacket that I got at the thrift store for $10! And a biker jacket from Forever 21 that isn't warm but will be perfect for the next month or so.
Today I also got an amazing leopard print cape which satisfies my need for both a cape and leopard print:

It's not actually as puffy as it looks, the dress I was wearing underneath has a very full skirt. I love love love this cape, plus the fact that its from the 50s and was only $30 makes it all so much better.
I will have a list of my favorite affordable jackets soon, but I had to get this fantasy shopping out of my system. I'll also post some pictures of my jacket collection soon!

Daily Outfit - Birthday!

Today was my birthday! My fiance and I decided to go vintage shopping at the new vintage shops in Harvard Square and it was so much fun. I got some great stuff, including a super cute dress from the 80's, a leopard print cape from the 50s, and some slips/nighties from the 50s. I've wanted a silk nightie ever since I became obsessed with Mad Men. They just seem so glamorous, much more so than regular pajamas. Anyway, I wore my vintage 50s skirt shopping to get in the mood, and as soon as I got the cape I had to wear it. I've been looking for leopard print for awhile now.

One of the most fun shows every season is the Agatha Ruiz de la Prada show. She always has the most creative and out there clothes. I don't think you could actually wear them, but I totally would. Especially this one.

It has one of those tunnels you would crawl through as a child attached to it! Wouldn't it be great if all clothes could have toys attached? You would never be bored!

I Knew Project Runway Editing Was Suspicious

"Then you see on the show that Ra'mon is dyeing the garment in the sink. That's after I made him take it out of the toilet, which he said he was using because it had a deeper basin. He was desperate to get some dye on it."

Apparently Nina was the only one holding out for his dress to win. Stupid Nina, we need Michael Kors back, where are you???

Last winter I made a sweater dress out of sweater fabric I bought from Mood (please, there's no way I have the patience to knit an entire dress). I accidentally made it too short so I wasn't able to wear it then. Then magically I lost some weight which made it long enough to at least be decent to wear, as long as I didn't bend over. Then even more magically I got super cool leggings that went perfectly with the dress! I've been waiting for it to be cool enough to wear it and today it was perfect!

An actual cute beach wear look from Project Runway

I had very high hopes for the team of Althea and Louise, mainly because I've loved what they've made so far and they both seem super nice. Anyway, I think my expectations were met (almost). Although I knew from the editing that they'd be stuck in the middle, it usually happens when they are barely shown.

This is adorable and I would wear it to the beach in a minute. I also disagree with Tim that dropping the dress into a skirt was a bad idea. It made a cute skirt and was also super practical if you want to tan for instance. I also love how the bathing suit top works into the top of the dress to make an interesting pattern and overall design. This really is the only look I could actually imagine wearing to the beach.

I really like this dress. The only problem is that I don't see how it connects to the first look. I also don't think it's very avant garde, adding a big train to a dress doesn't really make it avant garde. Otherwise I think the dress is gorgeous. I love the bodice, the gold makes it really beautiful. I also like the mini skirt portion of the bottom, and the way the ruffles overlap. I'd rather they just get rid of the train, but I think it was the only way to even attempt to make it avant garde. Really the failure isn't theirs but the producers. I wish they had known about the avant garde look ahead of time because I think they would have come up with something really amazing.

Worst Project Runway Challenge Ever

This really was one of the worst runway shoes in Project Runway's history and I blame it completely on the producers. I mean, first you should really tell the designers about the avant garde look first. Then maybe we wouldn't have seen piles of crap walking down the runway. Also, it was very unclear whether it was supposed to be a beachwear avant garde outfit or just an avant garde outfit that was related to the beachwear otufit. Personally I think it should have been the second and I think all of the designers (excluding Ramon) did too. Although I don't understand how gowns really qualify as being either related or avant garde. This is probably why Ramon won, even with the cocktail beachwear and illfitting dress.
Ramon (and technically Mitchell's) first dress:

It's a pretty dress, even if it is most definitely not appropriate for the beach. Although it looks like about 30 minutes of work was put into it. Just some twisting and draping of the chiffon and using a belt to get shape. They claimed to Tim that it was going to be sewn down but I kind of doubt that happened.

I mean look at the back. I don't think the uneveness is intentional and if it is that was a bad call. It just looks messy. And not beach messy, just badly designed messy.

Ramon lucked out on this one. First because it was the only one remotely beachy, or even really avante garde. Secondly because this kind of dress can either be thrown together in 30 minutes or carefully draped for hours to achieve the same effect. The only different is that when it's carefully draped you tend not to get the wierd bulges you see from the side:

Even the hooker lace outfit didn't make the model look like she had a penis, plus a saggy butt and boobs.
Overall though it had potential. Plus, I would have given him the win just because of the color in a sea of depressing brown dresses.
Also, Mitchell. Why on earth would you tell the judges you didn't do anything after you know they are just waiting for an excuse to auf you?

I Love Shoes

I love shoes, and fall shoes are always the best. Mainly because I've never been a fan of sandals (they always give me blisters) plus I love boots in all forms. These are all of my favorites that I've found so far, although I can't actually afford them.

1) I'm not sure what brand these are but I really love them. I'm into studs on shoes all of a sudden and these definitely deliver.

2) I'm am lusting for these. Of course they're Christian Louboutin and $2,875 so I'm not going to be buying them anytime soon. I can't think of any fall outfit that these wouldn't perfectly compliment. Plus, I love that they're snakeskin but almost look like newspaper. And I love anything with ruffles.

3) These shoes are from Topshop and only $110. I love the shape, it's super fun and they seem pretty comfortable. They're called dancing shoes and that's exactly what I would do in them. Plus suede shoes for fall are fantastic.

4) So so so adorable. They're Nanette Lapore and $395. I love them first because I love anything with a bow. Plus the color is beautiful and so unusual. I could almost justify buying them since I have never owned any shoes that color and I think they would go with just about anything.

5) I needed to have one animal print shoe on my list. They're definitely on trend for the fall, and leopard is always classy. I also like that the leopard only shoes on the little fold, instead of over the whole shoe which can be a little much. The shape is also classic so these can be worn with almost anything. 6) Every shoe wardrobe has to include a crazy awesome pair of shoes that make a statement all by themselves. This way when you can't think of something to wear you can just throw on all black, the shoes, and you're all set. I also love hot pink shoes, and straps so these are perfect. Well except for the price, Jimmy Choo $1,295.

7) These are my favorite favorite favorite pair of shoes. I am in love with these boots. They are the perfect boots for winter. I love wearing white outerwear in the winter, and with the addition of the fur at the top these would make any outfit completely classy and transformed into a winter wonderland. All'd you need is a white fur coat and you're set. Manolo Blahnik $1,495

Shoe Tutorial - Inspired from the Runway

I really loved these shoes from the Valentino 2009 couture show. Of course I can never actually afford any designer shoes so I decided to find a way to make them myself.

I started by going to the thrift store and finding some cheap plain black heels. I ended up getting a pair for only $5! Then I got some silver spray paint, trim, and glue.

(the second pair of shoes are for a second DIY project that I haven't gotten around to making yet)
First step was spray painting the shoes silver. It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted, but I think I like this way better anyway.

The third step is adding the trim to the shoes.

To do this I first measured where I wanted to the trim to go while wearing the shoes. Once I figured out where to attach the trim in the front I glued it and let it dry overnight (or I might have used velcro because I didn't have the patience to let it dry that long, but I do recommend actually having patience :-P).
After it dries I wrapped the trim over the top of my feet and attached it to the back of the shoes. Again I glued it and let it dry overnight. The final result:

I love love love them and actually wear them a lot.

The Hilarity Of Mychael Knight's Performance

I'm sorry but after his horrendous Bryant Park collection I'm unsure why they brought him back for this. I know he was a fan favorite but I was not a fan. He seemed to get smug after getting through to the final four and I hate that. And since it seems like he's just been making a perfume line since his appearance, which isn't exactly designing, I don't know why the producers felt that he would have evolved at all. But I was glad they did because so much hilarity came out of his appearance, mostly because of the editing.
First of all, if his name wasn't right underneath his face I would not have known who this was.

Secondly his collection was so so unbelievably bad, especially in comparison to everyone elses. The funniest part was when he was talking to Tim Gunn and they kept trying to keep his hideous yellow top out of the screen. Because if that was seen in full view it would have been more than obvious that he had no chance of winning.

Here is the quick shot of the outfit, which let's face it is amateur and ugly looking.

This is the most of the outfit you see during the Tim critique, and he never actually addresses that outfit. Clearly they tried very hard to hide it from view.
And the look on the runway:

There's really nothing to say. It doesn't fit, it's ugly, you could find it at a cheapo discount store.

To give credit where it's due this dress is cute. I like the origami like effect and the color's nice. It no where near makes up for the hideousness of the last look though. Not sure why she's carrying an oversized envelope though.

This look is so wrong. Especially because Nina actually praised it, I'm so hoping that the producers made her because otherwise she has lost all fashion credibility with me.
It's as basic a dress that you can make, skin tight jersey. Plus the color's hideous, it clashes with that strange yellow belt thing. The little cropped jacket is even worse. It has visible shoulder pads, you can see the outline through the fabric, not surprising considering how thin the fabric is. This would be laughed off of any red carpet, it could be bought for under $20 at one of those tacky stores with the mannequins wearing only jeans in the windows.
I'm not even going to post the restaurant look, it's just ridiculous.

Obsessed

For my website I was putting together looks inspired from the Fall 2009 runways. When I made my Biker Chic look I honestly fell in love.

So I may have gone out and purchased almost the entire look. I got the metallic faux leather biker jacket from Forever 21 which isn't exactly the one shown but pretty close, I'll post a picture once I get one of me wearing it. Love love love though. I also felt that I needed faux leatherish leggings, which Forever 21 also had!

These are seriously amazing and somehow insanely flattering. They actually make me look like I have a butt! I debuted them at the SF convention I went to last weekend and they were a big hit. I think I feel comfortable enough to wear them in real life, although not without a long enough shirt to cover my butt yet.
I really have fashion ADD. This style is so different from what I was wearing all summer but I figure it's fall, time to have some fun. Plus it's my last semester at Harvard, why not stand out?

Why the Rachel Zoe Project is Amazing

Why Chris Should Have Come In At Least Second

There are many reasons but the main one is he was the one with an actual collection! Yes it may have been repetitive because of his overuse of the same fabric, but that was nowhere near the only reason his collection was cohesive. The styling and shapes all were clearly from the same designer for the same collection. Plus, if the judges were looking for evolution as a designer he unquestionably should the most growth of anyone.

Apart from the boots this look is amazing. And the boots couldn't have been entirely his fault as they only had a certain amount to choose from. The plain gray dress underneath is super cute, I love the sleeves especially and could even be worn by itself. I also love the plaid vest like thing over it, reminds me of a Jedi in a good way. Plus the styling is so cool and definitely high fashion. The hood is interesting and orange tights are just awesome always.

I want want want this dress/jacket/whatever. I would wear it constantly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

This one's definitely not perfect, but I actually liked it better than Korto's. The skirt's fun and is something I'd actually wear. The bust is crazy but no more unflattering than Korto's. Placemats do not make for flattering clothes, there's really nothing to be done about that. It also actually fit in with the rest of his looks with is something that cannot be said for Korto's.

This was the problem of the collection. It's extremely hard and maybe impossible to make a red carpet dress out of wool, but Michael Kors is the one who said there are no rules anymore so shouldn't that count for wool evening dresses as well as Daniel's short dress? Nicole Kidman couldn't pull this off (I think she'd collapse under the weight) but it's incredibly unlikely that she'll actually wear any of the looks. There are several actresses that could pull that off, especially with a little tweaking around the hips.
I so wish that he could have beaten out Korto. He seemed so grateful for all the praise he did get, and never came across as entitled and smug like so many other of them.

Thigh High Boots

I have been lusting for thigh high boots ever since I started thinking about my fall wardrobe. However, I was not confident in my ability to find boots that were not incredibly tacky/hooker boots for around $100. Here are some fabulous ones way out of my price range:

However, being the thrifty shopper that I am I managed to find a pair of over the knee boots that I LOVE for exactly $100!

I got them from DSW. They're Jessica Simpson's brand which makes me feel slightly shameful, but really no one has to know!

Why I'm Excited For This Season of Project Runway

It actually seems like these people are more talented than most have been in the past. There really was only one hideously ugly dress (which didn't get sent home) and the one that did was just because she was being crazy. Also compare Daniel V's dress for the final challenge of season 2, to make a gown for the red carpet to that of Ramon for the first challenge.

Seriously, Ramon's is miles better than Daniels and this was his first challenge! Plus, he didn't even win while Daniel did! I have faith that there will be some excellent fashion on this season, and it won't be the disappointment that season 5 was. (also, my putting down of Daniel's dress has nothing to do with the fiasco of the all star challenge)

Why Korto Did Not Deserve Second Place (and certainly not the win)

I know that I have a personality bias against Korto (seriously I can't stand her) but even so I do not think she even deserved to be in the top. The challenge was to make a collection. What she made was not a collection even in the loosest terms. None of the looks seemed like they went together at all. The shapes were different, the fabrics were all different, there was no real color story. Also, all of her clothes were incredibly derivative of her Bryant Park collection, which wasn't all that innovative itself.
First Look:

It's a cute dress, but that's pretty much it. I like the skirt, but overall it looks exactly like what she did for Bryant Park and with the judges stressing evolution so much I cannot understand how she got to second place.
Second Look:

This look is just ugly. The waist is crazy unflattering, the zipper wasn't put in well, and the vest is just incredibly ill-fitting. When people say that she shouldn't have won because the judges said nothing bad about her I think that they don't realize that we don't hear the entire judging. There is no way they didn't say something about the ill-fitting pants and vest. No Way. Plus the fabric is so blah. And this look has absolutely nothing to do with the previous one. In a collection of only four pieces they have to all be cohesive and yet there was no cohesion between any of her pieces. I refuse to believe that didn't come up in judging.

This dress is pretty if you ignore the breast area (which lifetime apparently decided to do). It didn't actually fit there and made that section look wonky. Like most of Korto's designs, I hate hate hate how she treats the boob area. The dresses either don't fit or the boobs don't match. It's just so unflattering. I mean look at this:

I dare you to say that that's flattering. Also, again this dress has absolutely nothing to do with the previous two looks.
And finally the restaurant look that everyone put on a pedestal even though it really didn't deserve to be there.

The bottom is pretty and doesn't look like it was made from restaurant materials. Although I will say it's just pretty, the judges went overboard praising her for this. It's not that far of a jump to see stones in a vase that look like beads and then use them like beads. Plus the top looks exactly like what it is, placemats. There is no way this could be worn to a movie premiere like Heidi suggested. Also, I'm still not sure which one her red carpet look was.
All in all, she should have been out immediately for not answering the challenge, she did not make a collection, she made four random pieces that did not fit together in the least. My opinion is that the judges wanted to build her hopes up because they knew if she came in second again she'd be just as cranky as she was last time and she did not dissapoint.

Project Runway All Star Challenge

This was the biggest disappointment I have ever watched. It's really a good thing I saw the first episode of the new season first or I may have just sworn off PR all together. First, I totally wanted Santino to win because he is my favorite contestant of all time, really the reason I started watching the show as well as my fiance. Plus he was the only entertaining one in the entire show, everyone else was soooo boring. So on the basis of personality alone I wanted him to win. Also, on the basis of personality alone I wanted Korto to lose. She was just as whiny, self-centered, and entitled as always. I'm sorry, but her Bryant Park collection was boring and not innovative at all, she absolutely did not deserve to win.
The real reason I was so upset about the show was based on the what the designers actually produced. Ok, Santino definitely did not deserve to win based on his collection. But the people in the top four? I would say 3/4 of them did not deserve to be there.
First of all, how in the world did Sweet Pea get into the top 4 over Uli. The only reason I can see is manipulation by the judges to get a certain story. Even Tim said her color story was matronly. So Uli vs. Sweet Pea:

This dress is super pretty, and slightly unusual with the way the the skirt drapes. The only problem is the model. I swear that the producers colluded with the judges to sabotage Uli in the model department because they wanted Sweet Pea in the top four, for some crazy reason. This dress does not at all go with this model which makes the entire look just look wrong. This dress needed romantic styling which is impossible to do with a model with no hair. Also, it doesn't match with the models skin tone. Compare this to Sweet Pea's dress.

It looks like an ugly nightgown especially with the sorry wilting flowers. It's also completely shapeless. But imagine Uli's dress on this model (also with better hair), it would have been gorgeous and the judges would not have been able to keep her out of the top four.

This was my favorite Uli dress, unfortunately there were no flattering pictures of it on the lifetime website, especially of the unique detailing on the side. Again I think the model ruins it. She looks angry, and honestly if you were wearing this dress you would not be angry. It's incredibly innovative and beautiful, especially her ability to make a spectacular dress with muted colors. She was beat down in her season for doing the same thing over and over again, yet now she is beat down because she evolved as a designer, complete bullshit.

This was the only dress I liked of Sweet Pea's but again it doesn't stand up to the most comparable dress that Uli made. It's a pretty basic one shoulder dress, the only things that make it different are the materials (leather)and the shoulder detail. Again, it doesn't look like she even attempted to make the top fit the actually body of the model (even skinny models have breasts) and she ended up lucking out with a much better model more suited for the dress.
For the next two there's really no competition whatsoever.
Uli's Red Carpet:

This wasn't my favorite outfit of Uli's. It is gorgeous, but a little too mature for my taste. But if you think of where it was going to be worn, Nicole Kidman's movie premiere it's prefect. Definitely something I could see her wearing.
Compare to Sweet Pea's Red Carpet:

Unfortunately they didn't post a picture of the entire dress, which I'm sure was purposeful because it disguises what a horrendous dress it actually was. Again it looked like a nightgown, especially with the ruffle around the bottom. And again it was completely shapeless. The only shape was created by the sash, which is really not acceptable. I could have made this dress in a few hours, I'm not surprised that Sweet Pea kept talking about how she was completely finished before anyone else.
Uli's restaurant challenge:

This is absolutely gorgeous and the only restaurant challenge look that did not look at all like it was made of unconventional materials. Nothing more to say. I would wear that in a heartbeat.
Sweet Pea's restaurant challenge:

This would be cute for either someone on a float in an Easter parade (if they even have those) or a costume for a 6 year old girl. Not a grown woman. It is the epitome of costumey. How in the world did the judges let this go? This alone tells you that the judging was decided well before they saw the actual collections. I would love to hear Tim Gunn's opinions on this challenge.

New Vintage Store!

I finally got my last check from work on the same day that I handed in two papers so I decided that I deserved some celebratory shopping. I had heard there was a vintage store in the square called Oonas so I decided to go there. So glad I did, it was the most amazing store, I could barely decide what to try on, let alone what to buy. In the end I got two great dresses (one I need to alter a bit) and an amazing hat!

Sometimes a Dress Looks Better Backwards

At the yard sale I got this amazing black paillettes dress. My first step was to take out the shoulder pads, I have no hips so emphasizing my shoulders is not what I want to be doing. Then I tried it on, and realized that the back might look really good as the front. Turns out I was right! The dress can now go from pretty conservative to super sexy.

It actually looks like I have breasts! Always a good thing with a fancy dress.

My Fashion Mistake

So last night while doing yoga and playing around on an exercise ball I managed to pull a muscle in my back. Of course this morning I completely forgot about this and paired heels with my million pound backpack. I almost didn't make it all the way to class, almost just collapsed in Harvard Yard. I also learned that if you're going to bring something with you to keep warm during class in the freezing air conditioning don't actually wear it on the walk, esp. if it's above 70 degrees out. So miserable right now.
To top it off, the dress I'm wearing I made for myself around Thanksgiving and since then I've lost about 30 pounds. So the breast area doesn't so much fit anymore. Oh well, I still look better than the typical Science Fiction fan so its ok.

I was in NYC this weekend and on Sunday Mitch and I decided it would be a perfect day for yard saling! We went on craigslist and found about 7 that we wanted to go to and even made a route on the GPS. Super fun, and we got a ton of great stuff.

Here is our trunk at the end of the day. Unfortunately most of it is covered by the mink coat($5!!!).

Here I am trying on the dress I just got over my outfit and holding the amazing preserved shark in a jar. The first thing I did when I got home was take out the shoulder pads in the dress and it look seriously amazing!

I got this amazing umbrella at a moving sale. It's massive, plus it has pictures of dogs on it. So cool.

This amazing petrified wood coffee table was also at that sale but unfortunately neither myself nor Mitch has any need for a petrified wood coffee table. Oh well, I take solace in my pretty apron.

Flying Purple People Eater

I got this shirt about a month ago and haven't worn it yet so I felt like I had to find a way to wear it today. I decided to go for all different shades of purple, plus my awesome silver sparkly skirt that I made and love. I love it even more now that I've lost weight and it's actually a wearable length! Also, I found these shoes the other day and decided I really liked them with this outfit.
It was also the perfect outfit for today. I got all of the financial aid I asked for and was actually finally able to register for classes. I'm taking science fiction because hello, I just had a dream about Captain Kirk plus you get to write a science fiction story for one of the papers. Plus I'm taking website design because it's graded completely on projects and Mitch guarateed I'd get an A. And I guess it will be a useful skill to have :-P.

Magical Shoes

I got these shoes the other day at the thrift store and they are my new absolute favorite shoes! The only problem is they are incredibly shiny and have the ability to distract me constantly as I walk and make me revel in their shininess. However, I believe they have a separate magical ability. So far I have come very close several times to running into something because I've been focusing on my feet. But I always look up right before I hit something. Pretty sure its because the shoes are magical.

Daily Outfit

Most of the time I think about and plan my outfit for the next day while I'm trying to fall asleep. Generally this is a very bad idea because it doesn't factor in the weather, or if the clothes I'm planning are actually clean. Anyway, this happened again yesterday.

I completely forgot that the top hook and eye closure on the vest was broken and didn't realize until I was about to put it on and walk out the door. So I just left it. Problem number 2 was that I had a billion doctors appointments that day (hence the blue bandage on my arm) and putting on and taking off the vest is a huge pain. Otherwise I loved the outfit. Plus I managed to remember my umbrella which I think makes up for the poorly planned outfit :-).

Where No Woman Has Gone Before

I had the strangest/most disturbing dream last night, which I believe was completely caused by the cough medicine. All of a sudden I realized I was sitting next to Captain Kirk (at least it wasn't the modern day William Shatner)and he had his arm around me. Spock sat across from us, and when I could hear what they were saying it was them trying to convince me to have a threesome with them. Ummm, no, not happening. First of all I was still engaged in my dream and secondly Spock had very long fingernails which were very unattractive. Luckily I woke up before anything of this actually happened, because really, how do you refuse a Captain of the Enterprise?
